Lewisburg Neighborhood Guide - Mandeville, LA
A Local Expert’s View from Nola Northshore Real Estate
Tucked along the western edge of Mandeville, Lewisburg is one of the Northshore’s most historic and charming waterfront communities. With its canopy of ancient live oaks, quiet bayous, and homes just steps from Lake Pontchartrain, Lewisburg offers a relaxed, Old South feel paired with unbeatable access to New Orleans via the Causeway. It’s the kind of place where neighbors wave from golf carts, kids ride bikes under moss-draped trees, and the lake breeze is part of everyday life.
A Short History
The neighborhood traces its name back to Joshua Lewis, a nephew of explorer Meriwether Lewis (of Lewis and Clark fame). A former justice on the Supreme Court of the Territory of Orleans, Joshua retired here to escape the heat and bustle of New Orleans. His heirs later named the tract “Lewisburg”.
During the Civil War, the area’s strategic position across the lake made it a point of interest for both sides. In the following decades a lumber boom brought mills and new residents, shaping the early character of the community. Today, one of the neighborhood’s proudest landmarks is the Seven Sisters Oak, a registered champion live oak believed to be 500–1,000 years old and often called one of the oldest in North America.
Location and Accessibility
Lewisburg is literally seconds off the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway (take the Mandeville exit, make one quick turn, and you’re home)! That proximity means most residents can be in Metairie in under 25 minutes and the New Orleans CBD in about 35–40 minutes on a normal day. Heading east, Old Mandeville’s lakefront, shops, and restaurants are just a 5–10 minute drive. You can bike to Old Mandeville and the lakefront as well (via a cut-through on Monroe Street), in about 10 to 15 minutes.
Neighborhood Character and Lifestyle
There are no formal subdivision gates or identical floor plans here. Lewisburg grew organically over decades, so every street feels unique. You’ll find raised Acadian cottages, Creole-style homes with wide porches, and newer builds that respect the area’s architectural roots. Mature live oaks create a green tunnel over most roads, and many homes sit along Bayou Castine or have deeded lake access. Evenings often mean catching sunsets over the water or walking to a neighbor’s dock. It’s quiet, friendly, and genuinely walkable in the older sections.
Housing Overview
Most homes were originally built from the 1950s through the 1980s, though many have been beautifully renovated or completely rebuilt in recent years. Lot sizes tend to be generous (¼ to ½ acre is common) and waterfront or bayou-front properties are highly sought after.
Current pricing generally falls between $450,000 and $900,000+, with the high end reserved for updated or new-construction homes on the water or with large lots. Because Lewisburg isn’t part of a traditional subdivision, there are fewer HOA rules and more architectural freedom, which appeals to buyers who want character over cookie-cutter.

Why Buyers Love Lewisburg
In my 11+ years helping families move to the Northshore, Lewisburg consistently tops the list for buyers who want:
- True waterfront or bayou living (many homes have piers or easy access to the water)
- Easy Causeway access for commuters
- Highly rated schools and a genuine sense of community
- Mature trees and historic charm you simply can’t replicate in newer subdivisions
It’s perfect for professionals who work in New Orleans or Metairie but want to come home to quiet streets, lake breezes, and a neighborhood that still feels like old Louisiana.
